Ep 15- An Intentional Man I Stan and Restan.
Hi babiesssss.. Get ready to be swept off your feet today.
Valerie had just finished journaling. Her pen still rested between her fingers, hovering over a half-written sentence she didn’t have the courage to complete:
“I still…”
Her phone buzzed but she didn’t need to look to know. Her heart had already responded.
Purity.
She stared at the screen for a long time, watching his name ring… and ring… and ring.
Her chest tightened.
“Omo…” she whispered under her breath, pressing her lips together.
Tammy, sprawled on the bed behind her, raised her head immediately.
“Who is it?”
Valerie didn’t answer. She didn’t need to.
Tammy’s eyes widened.
“EH HEH. EH HEH. PICK NA.”
Valerie shot her a look. “Keep quiet abeg.”
Tammy snorted and scrunched her face in a funny way.
The phone kept ringing and something in her chest… softened.
She picked up. “…Hello.”
There was a pause then she heard his voice. He sounded like he was afraid she might disappear if he spoke too loudly.
“Hi, mama.”
Her heart clenched.
God.
She had missed that voice.
She hated that she had missed it.
“Hi,” she replied, quieter now.
He exhaled slowly. “I didn’t think you’d pick.”
She leaned back against the headboard.
“I didn’t think I would too.”
A small breath of laughter escaped him.
“Thank you… for picking up.”
She didn’t respond immediately.
“Why are you calling, Purity?"
Tammy mouthed “WICKED GIRL” from the bed.
Valerie smiled and ignored her.
On the other end, he went quiet for a second.
“I miss you.”
Valerie’s fingers tightened around the phone. Her chest reacted before her mind could stop it.
But her voice was still so steady.
“You’ve said that before.”
“I know.”
“And you still left.” she knew she was not being fair but she had to give the man a hard time.
She heard his breath catch slightly.
“I deserve that.”
“Yes, you do.”
Tammy slapped her thigh silently, eyes wide and whispered “Ah ah! No mercy!”
Valerie smiled ignored her again.
“I’ve been wanting to call you,” he said softly.
“But I didn’t want to pressure you.”
“So why now?” she asked
He continued, voice low.
“I thought giving you space will help you make a decision”
“But now I can't take it anymore.”
Valerie swallowed. “I called to ask you something.”
She sighed softly. “Purity…”
“Please,” he said gently. “Just listen first.”
She closed her eyes briefly. “Okay.”
He exhaled. “I want us to try again.”
Her eyes opened immediately.
She sat up. “No.”
Tammy choked and Valerie shot her a look.
On the phone, Purity let out a small breath.
He expected it. “Okay.”
That response threw her off.
“…Okay?”
“Yes.” He paused. “I’m not surprised.”
Valerie frowned slightly and pouted. “Then why did you ask?”
“Because I still want you.”
Her throat tightened. “Purity….”
“I know you need time,” he added quickly.
“I know I hurt you.”
His voice softened. “I know I broke something.”
“I’m willing to rebuild it.”
Her chest ached because of how calmly he said it. Like he had already made peace with that.
“Do you know what you’re asking me?” she said quietly.
“Yes.”
“No, you don’t.”
“Then tell me.”
Her voice cracked slightly. “You’re asking me to trust you again.”
“You’re asking me to open up again.”
“I know.”
“You’re asking me to risk… losing myself again.”.
He didn’t respond immediately.
“I’m not asking you to lose yourself,” he said softly.
“I’m asking you to bring yourself… fully this time.”
Her breath hitched. She hated that that made sense.
“I don’t know how to. I'm still learning,” she admitted quietly.
“I’ll learn with you.”
She laughed softly. A sad laugh.
“You always have an answer.”
“No,” he said gently. “I just refuse to give up on you.”
Her heart squeezed painfully.
Tammy clutched a pillow dramatically. “God when oo?” she whispered loudly.
Valerie threw a pillow at her without looking.
Purity chuckled faintly. “Is Tammy there?”
“Yes.”
“Tell her that I can hear her.” He said
Tammy leaned forward immediately.
“HELLO SIR. HOW ARE YOU, SIR? PLEASE CONTINUE BEGGING LIKE I AM NOT HERE, SIR.”
Valerie groaned. “Tammy!”
Purity laughed properly this time. That sound hit Valerie straight in the chest.
God.
She missed him. She missed them. But she hardened her tone again.
“Purity, I’m not ready.”
“I know.”
“I’m serious.”
“I know, Mama.” That name again.
“I’m not trying to rush you.”
“Then stop asking me to date you.”
“I can’t.”
She blinked. “What?”
“I can’t stop wanting you.”
Her heart betrayed her again; it was beating too fast and too loud.
“Purity…”
“I’m not asking for perfection.”
He continued. “I’m just asking for another chance.”
She shook her head slowly.
“You already had one.”
“And I ruined it.”
He didn’t flinch. “And I hate that I did.”
That honesty disarmed her again.
She swallowed.
“Madam no dey waste this man time na” Tammy shouted.
“Betrayer!! Whose side are you on?”
Tammy raised both hands. “I am for love, biko not for anybody!”
Purity chuckled softly. He was quiet for a second.
“I Love you.”
Her chest tightened instantly and she looked away.
“Don’t do that.”
“Do what?”
“Say things like that.”
“Why?”
“Because…” she hesitated. “It gets to me.”
His voice softened even more.
“Maybe it should.”
“I even practiced something,” he said.
Valerie blinked. “What?”
“A song.”
She scoffed. “…You?”
“Yes.”
“God help me. You want to sing for me??”
Tammy sat up fully immediately she heard that. She pleaded with Val to put the phone on speaker.
“Ah! Valerie please na. I can't miss this concert!”. Valerie just laughed and pushed her off the bed.
Purity cleared his throat. Then softly…very softly… He started singing.
“So let me love you..”
“Like my life depends on it. Every hour, every second that I am awake”
Valerie’s lips parted slightly. He continued, quieter now
“.. Let me Love you. Like we are rewriting history. Close your eyes… Let's go anywhere away from here.. Let's go anywhere away from here” He stopped
Valerie blinked then suddenly, she started laughing, she laughed so hard that her tummy started hurting. .
“Oh my God—Purity please STOP.”
Tammy fell back on the bed laughing.
“Ah ah! Romance minister!”
Purity groaned softly. “I knew you’d laugh.”
“You sound like choir practice gone wrong.”
“Ouch.”
“But…” she smiled faintly. “That was… sweet.”
He exhaled. “I was serious, you know.”
“And I meant every word.”
Her laughter faded slowly and was replaced with something softer.
“Still no,” she said quietly.
He sighed. “I know you're a hard girl.”
“But I’ll keep trying.”
She shook her head. “You’re stubborn.”
“I’m in love.”
She looked away quickly. Her voice was softer now. “I need a bit of time.”
“I’ll give you time.”
“I mean it.”
“I know you do.”
She swallowed. “And don’t show up at my place.”
He chuckled. “I won’t.”
“And stop calling me every day.”
“…I’ll try.”
“Purity.”
“Okay, okay.”
Then he said softly “Can I see you?”
She froze. Her heart started racing again.
“I just told you to give me time.”
“But why can't I just see you again? I thought we were making progress.” he whined liked a child
“Purity, Avoid me oo.”
He sighed softly. “I just want to look at you, but it's fine if you don't wanna see me.”
Her chest tightened. She frowned slightly.
Why did he give up so fast.
“I’ll wait.” he added
“For what?”
“For when you’re ready.”
Her throat tightened.
“Goodnight, Purity.”
“…Goodnight, Valerie.”
Then she ended the call. The silence that followed was loud.
Tammy sat up immediately.
“YOU WILL MARRY THAT MAN.”
“Tammy, shut up.”
“You’re smiling!”
“I’m not!”
“You are!”
Valerie grabbed a pillow and buried her face in it.
Her heart was racing. Her mind was confused. Her emotions were… everywhere.
Purity stared at his phone with a small smile on his lips. She didn’t say yes but she didn’t walk away either. He was ready to get his baby back.
He didn't sleep well that night. Not after the call, not after hearing her laugh, not after hearing her say no… and yet not completely shut him out. That kind of “no” was dangerous. It sounded like one that gave hope.
He sat on the edge of his bed in his apartment in Lagos, elbows resting on his knees, phone dangling loosely in his hand. The city outside was loud as usual; cars, distant music, someone arguing two streets away.
He ran his hand over his face slowly.
“God…” he exhaled.
“I don’t know what to do.”
Because he had tried. He apologized, and showed up, he had humbled himself. Yet she was still holding back. She was not outrightly rejecting him but she was not giving him access either. And somehow… that felt harder. Because at least rejection is clear. But this was uncertain. He didn't know what to do.
He stood up abruptly, pacing the room.
“I can’t lose her again,” he muttered.
“…but I don’t even know how to win her back.”
For the first time in a long time, Purity didn’t feel in control. He grabbed his phone and sent a message to the guys.
“If you're awake, please call me. It's kinda urgent”
Ten minutes later, his phone rang.
Video call.
He picked up immediately. And Joel’s face appeared first–serious, observant, already reading his expression.
Daniel came in next, half lying on his bed, eating something.
“Oya talk,” Joel said simply.
Purity leaned back against the wall. He didn’t ease into it.
“I spoke to Valerie.”
Daniel sat up immediately.
“Okayyy?!”
Joel’s eyes narrowed slightly. “And?”
Purity exhaled. “She still didn’t agree.”
Daniel hissed. “Omo. She's such a hard guy”
“But she didn’t shut me out tho,” Purity added quickly.
That made Joel lean forward.
“Soo??.”
Daniel shook his head slowly.
“Guy… but I'm sure you know that you messed up.”
“I know.”
“No, like… YOU MESS UP.”
“I know, Daniel.” he sounded exasperated. Why was everyone mentioning this. He already knew and he was trying to make it right.
Joel raised a hand. “Relax.”
Then he looked at Purity carefully.
“So you still love her abi?”
Purity didn’t hesitate. “Guy!! Yes na.”
“Do you want to marry her?”
“…Yes.”
Daniel whistled softly. “Serious matter.”
Joel nodded slowly.
“Okay. Then this isn’t just about getting her back.”
Purity frowned slightly. “What do you mean?”
“This is about proving that you’re ready.”
Purity swallowed. “I am ready.”
Joel tilted his head. “Then show it.”
“How?”
That was the question. The one that had been eating him alive.
Joel leaned back.
“Shey you know that Valerie is not just emotional.”
“She processes things. I have worked with her in the media team for a while now and so i know”
Purity nodded slowly. “I know.”
“ I'll advise you to not rush her heart,” Joel continued. “Convince her world.”
Purity frowned. “How?”
Daniel snapped his fingers.
“Rhema!!!!!”
Joel smiled slightly. “ Speak to her mentor.”
Purity blinked. “Her… mentor?”
“And her mother,” Joel added.
Purity sat up straighter. “You guys are serious oo”
Joel's gaze didn’t shift. “Very.”
“If you want Valerie… you don’t go halfway.”
“You go through the people that matter to her.”
Purity’s mind started racing.
Her mentor. Her mom. Those weren’t just people. Those were people who could influence her decision.
He exhaled slowly. “…What do I even say to them?”
“The truth,” Joel said simply.
Daniel grinned. “And add small ‘aunty, I love your daughter’ spice.”
Purity couldn’t help it, he laughed. For the first time that night.
“Do you think it will work?”
Joel shrugged. “If she still loves you… yes.”
“If she doesn’t… nothing will.”
Then Daniel leaned forward.
“But bro… you need to do something that will touch her.”
Purity looked up. Something shifted in his eyes.
“What kind of something?”
Daniel smiled slowly.
“That one… you’ll figure it out on your own .”
After the call ended, Purity sat there staring at his phone. Then one name came to mind.
Tammy.
He dialed Tammy's number.
She picked on the second ring.
“Ah! Romeo is calling me. What do you want?”
“I need help.”
She gasped dramatically. “Ah ah! The man has humbled himself!”
“Tammy, please.”
She laughed. “Okay okay, talk.”
“I need Valerie’s mom’s number.”
“…Ahhhhh?”
“Tammy.”
“You want me to die?”
“I’m serious.”
“And her mentor’s number too.”
“JESUS IS LORD.”
“Tammy.”
She groaned loudly. “You people will not kill me.”
“Please.”
There was a pause. Then her tone softened slightly.
“…You really love her oo. Hope you know her mentor is a tough woman?”
“Yes.”
Tammy exhaled.
“Hmm.”
“I will send it.”
Relief flooded him instantly.
“But”
He froze.
“You will not tell her I gave you.”
“Of course.”
“Swear.”
“I swear.”
“On what?”
“Tammy.”
“Swear properly!”
“I swear I won’t tell her.”
She narrowed her eyes. “I’m trusting you o.”
“Thank you.”
A few seconds later his phone buzzed.
Two contacts.
Mummy Val
Val's Mentor (P. Laura)
Purity stared at the screen. This was it. No going back now.
He didn’t call the mentor first because it felt too formal and risky. He was scared of her so he called her mom first.
The phone rang. Once. Twice. Three times
“Hello?”
A woman’s voice.
“Good evening, ma.”
“Good evening. Who is this?”
He swallowed slightly.
“My name is Purity.”
Pause.
“…Purity?”
“Yes, ma.” Another pause but longer this time.
“You’re Valerie’s Purity?”
His heart skipped. “…Yes, ma.”
She laughed softly.
“Ohhh okay… I have heard about you.”
He smiled slightly. “I hope… in a good way, ma.”
“We will find out,” she said playfully.
He relaxed a little. “Ma, I just wanted to introduce myself properly.”
“That is good.”
“And… I wanted to say I’m sorry.”
There was silence on the line.
“For hurting your daughter.”
Her voice softened. “She told me everything.”
“She was really hurt.”
His chest tightened. “I made a mistake, ma.”
“Hmm.”
“I’m trying to make it right.”
“Tell me about yourself.”
And just like that the conversation opened.
They talked. He told her about his work. His ministry calling and his family.
She listened and asked questions.
“Men don’t like to admit fear,” she said at some point.
He chuckled. “I’m learning, ma.”
“Good.”
Then she said something that stayed with him.
“Osas… is not that difficult.”
“She is just careful.”
“I understand that now.” he nidded
“She needs safety.”
“I want to be that, ma.”
“We will see.”
“I like you,” she added.
And Purity’s shoulders dropped. Relief he didn’t know he was carrying.
“Thank you, ma.”
“But liking you is not enough oo,” she continued.
“I know, ma.”
“You must be consistent.”
“I will be.”
She hummed.
“I will love to speak to your mother.”
Purity blinked. “…My mom?”
“Yes.”
He smiled slowly.
“She’s also in Benin, ma.”
“Ohhh that is very good.”
“I will like us to meet up .”
“I’ll arrange it, ma.”
“Do that.”
“Thank you so much for your time, ma”. He thanked her.
Purity called his mom after the call ended. The woman was so happy to finally meet Valerie's mom. She had been begging to know the family of the lady he wanted to marry.
Two days later the two women met. Valerie’s mom was open, warm, expressive while Purity’s mom was calm, composed and observant.
They greeted each other and then sat down.
“How many children do you have?” Val's mom asked.
“I have just Purity. I didn't try to conceive after him because we really wanted to do our best for him” Mrs Nwaefuna–Purity's mom replied.
“Ohhhh. That is amazing. I also gave birth to just Valerie. After her dad and I got separated, I didn't see the need to get married again. Anyways… Where are you from?”
“I'm from Anambra state while my husband is from Enugu. We both moved to Benin after we got married and we've been here ever since. How about you?” Mrs Nwaefuna replied.
“That is amazing. I love igbo people so much. My late mom was igbo from Abia state. My husband and I are from Benin. I grew up here and I love the city so much.”
“That is so beautiful. We will get along so well.” Purity mom said and they both laughed.
“Yes we will ooo. Now to the main matter on ground. Your son loves my daughter and wants to seek for forgiveness,” Valerie’s mom said plainly.
Purity’s mom nodded. “Yes. He wants them back.”
“He really hurt her sha.”
“I know.” “He is not perfect,” his mom added. “But he fears God.”
Valerie’s mom smiled slightly.
“That is what I want to confirm.”
“And what have you seen?”
Valerie’s mom leaned back. “Ehhh.. The boy is trying.” “He is a responsible young man and they'll give us cute grandkids.”
They laughed, shared stories and even gisted about their children like old friends. By the end of it there was ease and a silent agreement to help their kids get back together.
Before they left, Purity’s mom brought out her phone.
“My son asked me to do something.”
Valerie’s mom raised a brow.
“What is that?”
“He wants us to record a video pleading with Valerie to accept him back.”
“Haewwww… this boy.. He's such a romantic. My daughter sef can form hard guy too much.” “My sister lets do the Lord's work oo. I am sooo ready “ Val's mum replied and the two women laughed so hard. Purity's mom was relieved that the woman was not a tough but to crack. It was easy to relate with her.
Purity’s mom pressed record on her phone and started.
“Valerie…” she began, smiling.
“This is your future mother-in-law speaking”
They both laughed.
“Please forgive my son,” she continued.
“He is a good boy… sometimes foolish, but good.”
Valerie’s mom added playfully
“My daughter… don’t be doing shakara too much oo.” “Love is not pride. The man fine and he is ready to change. Abeg no go loose better man because of that yur strong mind “
They both laughed again.
“Give him a chance, please” they said together. Then they video ended.
Later that night Purity sat in his room watching the video. Over. And over. And over again. He was so happy that they both vibed well. He couldn't wait to see his baby's reaction when she sees the video.
Purity dressed differently the next morning. Not his usual effortless, tech-bro clean look. He wore a soft blue shirt. Ironed like he had somewhere important to be. Dark trousers. Polished shoes.
He stood in front of the mirror longer than necessary. Adjusted his collar and exhaled
“God… help me not to mess this up.”
Because this meeting? This was not just a conversation. This was going to be a seriousssss evaluation.
Valerie’s mentor lived in a quiet and classy part of Lagos. Even the gate alone felt like it filtered nonsense before you enter. He already scheduled a meeting with her the previous day after he dropped the call with his mom. He needed to see her physically.
Purity stood outside for a few seconds after parking. His hands were slightly sweaty. His heart was beating faster than he expected. He wasn’t nervous around clients. He wasn’t nervous speaking in rooms.
But this? This was different.
Because this woman had influence over Valerie’s decisions.
He rang the bell and the door opened.
She stood there. Calm composed and very observant.
The kind of woman that didn’t need to raise her voice to command respect. He almost ran back in fear but he knew if he had to do this to win Valerie back, he would do it a thousand times again.
“Good afternoon, ma.” he greeted
“Good afternoon.”
Her eyes scanned him, briefly, but thoroughly.
“You’re Purity.”
“Yes, ma.”
“Come in.”
Her living room was simple and elegant. Everything placed with intention.
He sat where she directed. His back straight, hands clasped loosely, trying not to look like he was in an interview.
She didn’t sit immediately. She watched him for a few seconds.
“Why are you here?” This woman was tough!!!
Purity inhaled slowly. “I came cause I love Valerie.”
Her expression didn’t change.
“That is not enough.” “...try again.”
He nodded. “I hurt her, ma.”
“I made a decision for both of us without involving her.”
“I thought I was protecting her… but I was protecting myself.” That made her sit.
Finally.
“Go on.”
Encouraged, he continued. “I was afraid.”
“Of what?”
“Of losing control.”
“Hmmm.”
He swallowed. “She saw me. Completely.”
“My fears. My inconsistencies. My weaknesses.”
“And instead of staying and growing… I ran.”
The room felt still.
“And now?” she asked.
“I want to do it right.”
“How?”
That question again. But this time he had something.
“I’m not here to rush her.”
“I’m not here to convince her emotionally.”
“I’m here to prove… that I can love her in a way that feels safe.”
Her gaze softened slightly. But only slightly.
“You think you can do that?”
“I’m learning to.”
“That is not confidence.”
“It’s honesty, ma. I'm being honest.”
That… made her pause. Then she leaned back.
“Do you understand Valerie?”
“…I’m still learning her, ma.”
“Good.” She folded her arms lightly. “Valerie is not afraid of love.” “She is afraid of losing herself in it.”
His chest tightened.
“Her father’s absence taught her that love can be… neglect.”
He nodded slowly. “I see that now.”
“So tell me” she leaned forward slightly, “Why should she trust you?”
The question landed heavy. Purity didn’t look away.
“Because I’m not running anymore.”
“I’ve faced what I was avoiding.”
“My fear of responsibility.”
“My fear of being needed.”
“My fear of being… consistent.”
Her eyes searched his face. Looking for cracks or performance.
She found none. Just… sincerity.
“You’ve spoken to God about this?” she asked.
“Yes, ma.”
“And what did He say?”
Purity hesitated.
“He corrected me.”
“He showed me that I made decisions without Him.”
“That I acted out of fear, not faith.”
She nodded slowly.
“Good.”
Then suddenly
“Call Pastor Ade, your mentor.”
Purity blinked. “…Ma?”
“Call your Mentor...”
He didn’t question it. He dialed his number and put it on speaker.
“Hello, Purity.”
“Good afternoon, sir.”
“Good afternoon. How can I help you today?”
Purity glanced at the mentor. She gave a small nod.
“I am here with Valerie's mentor, sir. Pastor Laura.”
Pastor Ade’s voice came through, warm and knowing.
“Ohhhh great.”
The mentor smiled faintly.
“Good afternoon, Pastor Ade.”
“Good afternoon, Pastor Laura.”
Then she spoke
“ Please tell me about this young man.”
Then Pastor Ade chuckled softly.
“Which version of him?”
They all laughed lightly. Then his tone shifted.
“He is sincere.” “He loves deeply.”
“But he is learning responsibility.”
Purity swallowed.
“He made a mistake,” Pastor Ade continued. “But he is not running from it.”
The mentor nodded slowly.
“And Valerie?” “She still loves him.”
“Do you believe he is right for her?” she asked.
“Yes. I've prayed and counseled them both.”
The room went still. Pastor Ade continued
“But they both need growth.”
“They must choose God individually before choosing each other again.”
The mentor smiled slightly.
“That, I agree with, sir.”
They spoke for a while on how to individually help them grow better in God and then the call ended.
Silence followed. Then she looked at Purity.
“I like you.”
His shoulders relaxed slightly.
“But that does not mean I will convince her for you.”
“I understand, ma.”
“You will need to earn her.”
“I want to.”
“That's good. I will help you make the video after I pray about it. Is that fine?”
“Yes, ma. Yes. Thank you so much”
She nodded, stood up and he knew the conversation was now over.
Later that evening Purity sat across from Joel. Joel was a web developer and he needed his help to win his girl back. All he needed to do was buy him Chickwhizz from chicken republic and a bottle of Coca Cola and Joel agreed to come over to his house.
Joel leaned back, sipping from the drink.
“So… what are we building?”
Purity exhaled slowly. “Something she won’t expect.”
Joel grinned. “I like where this is going.”
“I want a website.”
Joel blinked. “…A website?”
“Yes.”
“For Valerie.”
Joel leaned forward. “Okayy…”
“What’s the theme?”
“Blue and white.”
Joel nodded immediately.
“Her colors.”
“Yes.”
“What’s the goal?”
Purity paused. Then smiled slightly.
“To show her that I really would go to any length to win her back”
Joel froze. “Guy…” “This is mad.”
“I know.”
“I love it.”
They started building from that evening. The Homepage was a gentle white background with soft blue accents flowing like waves. At the center was a simple line:
“Valerie… this is me choosing you again.”
Below it was a small button.
“Start Here.”
When you click on that button, the screen transitions into the different videos.
Joel leaned back after 24 hours of work.
“Guy…” “This thing is sooo romantic. Omo!!! You dey love my guy”
Purity smiled faintly. “I gree, joor. .”
Joel shook his head. “You’re gone.”
Purity didn’t deny it. Because he was completely gone. A finished man.
Later that night, he sent the link to Valerie with a simple message.
“For you, my queen.”
Valerie stared at her phone. Her heart was beating so fast. She hadn’t clicked it yet. But somehow she already felt it. Her finger hovered over the screen. Then slowly she tapped.
At the center was a simple line:
“Valerie… this is me choosing you again.”
Below it was a small button.
“Start Here.”
When she clicked on that button, the screen transitioned into a video.
The video of her mom and Purity's mom asking her to forgive Purity and go back to him. She laughed so hard when she watched it. Those women were dramatic.
Then another video came up after that. Her mentor. Valerie inhaled deeply.
Purity really went the extra mile. Her mentor was no easy person to convince.
“Valerie, my darling, he is not perfect. We all aren't. But he is intentional. And intentional men are rare. Pray. Then choose with peace.” “I have prayed about it, I've counseled you, and I think it is time to open up your heart to him again. Please give him a chance to make things right”
It was short but it moved her deeply. Her eyes were teary now. This man was really intentional.
Next video was Tammy. Very Dramatic Tammy.
“Valerie! If you don’t answer this boy, I will answer him myself!” “See eh, if you don’t date this man again, I will personally disown you as my friend. I cannot suffer this level of romance in vain.”
“Stop with the shakara. I know you loveeee him. So baby, kill that pride and follow this fine man, jare. An intentional man, I Stan and restan.”
She didn't know when she started laughing so hard. Typical Tammy.
Next up was Pastor Ade. Serious pastor Ade.
“Daughter…I've asked you to pray.”
“But do not let fear answer for you.”
“Let God do his thing. Do not allow fear stop what God is building with you two. Please forgive my Son. He loves you and he is ready to do better by you.”
“Arghhh!! This man really went far oo” she thought as she wiped the tears from her eyes
Then the final video came up.
Purity. Looking straight into the camera. Her heart melted immediately. She loved this man so much.
“Valerie… Mama”
He exhaled. “I’m not here to rush you.”
“I’m not here to pressure you.”
“I’m here because I love you.”
His voice softened. “I’ve made mistakes.”
“But this time I’m choosing growth and responsibility.”
“I’m choosing… you.”
“I don’t want a perfect love, baby.”
“I want a real one.” “With you.”
His eyes softened. “ I don’t deserve you. But I’m willing to grow into the man that can love you right. Please… give us another chance
“So I’m asking again…” “Will you try with me?”
This time, she was crying. Full blown, embarrassing tears.
The screen faded then the final page.
Two buttons.
YES. NO
Purity had not slept. He had laid on his bed, turned from one side to another, stared at the ceiling, checked his phone, opened the website again, closed it, prayed, tried to rest, sat up again… over and over.
His heart was restless in a way that prayer alone had not immediately calmed. Because this time, the outcome wasn’t in his control.
He had done everything he knew to do. He had humbled himself. He had sought counsel. He had gone through the proper channels—her mother, his mother, her mentor, his pastor.
He had laid his pride down piece by piece until there was nothing left but sincerity.
And still…
She had not clicked “Yes.”
That tiny button on the website felt like the weight of his entire future.
He sat up again, dragging his hands over his face.
“God…” he whispered into the quiet of his room, “I’ve done my part. Please… touch her heart.”
Valerie stared at her phone. The website was still open. The videos… she had watched them all again. And again. And again.
Her mother’s voice still echoed in her ears.
“Osas, the boy love you o. Forgive am…”
Her mentor’s calm, steady tone.
“Valerie, he is not perfect. But he is intentional. And intentional men are rare. Pray. Then choose with peace.”
Tammy’s dramatic tears.
“See eh, if you don’t date this man again, I will personally disown you as my friend. I cannot suffer this level of romance in vain!”
And then…
Purity.
His voice had broken in that last video.
“ I don’t deserve you. But I’m willing to grow into the man that can love you right. Please… give us another chance.”
Her chest tightened again.
“God please” she whispered, dropping her phone on the bed.
This was not small. This was a man fighting for her.
She stood up abruptly and began pacing her room. Her mind was loud.
What if he hurts you again?
What if you lose yourself again?
What if you’re not ready?
She held her head.
“But what if this is God?” she whispered.
That question…
That question silenced everything else.
She sat on the edge of her bed and closed her eyes. She did not want to move by just her emotions.
“Holy Spirit…” her voice cracked, “I don’t want to choose out of fear anymore.”
Tears slipped down.
“I don’t want to run… but I don’t want to be foolish either.”
Her chest rose and fell unevenly.
“Is this safe?”
Then softly… Peace didn’t come like a loud answer. It came like a gentle settling.
She felt very calm.
“I still love him…” she admitted out loud.
Her eyes drifted back to her phone.
The website. That YES button.
Her fingers hovered over it. She stared at it for longvg. Her heart raced and her breath hitched.
Then suddenly. She pulled her hand back.
“No…”
Her voice was firm this time.
“I’m not doing this on a screen.”
She grabbed her keys. Her heart was beating so fast it felt like it could jump out of her chest. She didn’t overthink it.
Lagos traffic did not care about emotional moments. Cars honked. Keke drivers shouted. Streetlights blinked lazily. But inside her car… Everything was intense. Her grip on the steering wheel tightened.
“What if he doesn’t want me anymore?”
Her chest tightened. “What if I’m too late?”
Tears blurred her vision briefly.
She blinked rapidly. “No. No. Focus.”
She pressed the accelerator slightly.
“I’m not losing him again.”
Purity was pacing. Back and forth. Back and forth. His phone was on the table. He had checked it so many times it had become ridiculous. Nothing. No notification. No message. No “Yes.”
His chest felt tight.
“What if she says no?” he whispered.
That thought… It had been there all along. He just hadn’t allowed himself to fully feel it. Until now. He stopped pacing and ran his hands through his hair.
“God… please.”
His voice cracked. “I love her.”
Then a whisper in his heart:
Trust Me.
He swallowed. “I’m trying…”
Then he heard a knock on his door.
He froze. His brows furrowed.
“Who is that?”
He wasn’t expecting anyone. Then another knock came in. This time softer.
His heart began to race. Slowly, he walked toward the door. Each step felt heavier than the last.
His hand rested on the handle. For a second… He hesitated. Then he opened it.
There stood Valerie she was breathing fast. Eyes slightly swollen.
Purity blinked. Once. Twice.
His brain struggled to catch up with reality.
“Val…?”
His voice came out like a whisper.
She didn’t answer. She just stepped forward and wrapped her arms around him. It was not a gentle hug. It was not polite. It was not careful. It was desperate.
She held him tight like he would disappear.
Purity’s breath hitched as his arms instinctively wrapped around her.
“Valerie…” his voice broke.
She buried her face in his chest and then she started crying. She sobbed loudly.
“Purity…” she cried against him, clutching his shirt tightly, “you stressed me… you stressed me so much…”
His own tears spilled instantly. “I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…”
She pulled back slightly, but not fully letting go. Her hands still gripping him like she was afraid he might disappear.
“Why would you do all that?” she cried.
Her voice trembled.
“That website… my mum… your mum… my mentor… everybody…”
He let out a shaky breath. “I didn’t know what else to do.”
Her eyes searched his face.
“You really went that far…”
“I would go further,” he said immediately, voice steady despite the tears.
“For you.”
That broke her again. Fresh tears.
“Omo…” she laughed weakly through tears, “you will not kill me in this life…”
They stood there. Holding each other.
For a split second their faces were too close, too familiar, too charged. His eyes dropped to her lips. Her breath caught and time slowed.
Everything in him wanted to close that gap. Everything. But he didn’t move.
He just whispered “Not yet…”
Her chest tightened. Because that restraint, that discipline, that respect…
It said more than a kiss ever could.
She exhaled slowly and stepped back slightly trying to regain composure.
“I didn’t click yes,” she said softly.
His heart dropped. But he stayed calm.
“Okay…”
She looked at him. Really looked.
“I came instead.”
“I didn’t want to choose you on a screen,” she continued.
“I wanted to choose you looking at you.”
His chest tightened.
She took a deep breath. “I’m scared.”
Her honesty was raw.
“I won’t lie. I’m still healing. I still have fears. I still don’t fully trust myself in this.”
He nodded slowly. “I understand.”
“But…” her voice broke slightly, “I also know that I love you.”
“And I know you love me.”
His eyes filled. “I do.”
She swallowed. “I can’t promise you that everything will be perfect.”
“I’m not asking for perfect.”
“I can’t promise I won’t get triggered again.”
“I’ll be there when you do.” she smiled
“I can’t promise I’ll always get it right.”
“I’ll grow with you.”
She stared at him.
Then finally…
“YES.”
His breath caught. “Val…”
“I’ll try with you again.”
“She said yes…”
He whispered it like he didn’t trust his own ears.
“You’re saying yes?”
She nodded slowly. Tears slipping down again.
“Yes.”
He broke down completely and pulled her into him again.
“Thank you…” he whispered against her hair.
“Thank you for choosing me again…”
She laughed softly through tears.
“Don’t mess it up o…”
He pulled back slightly and looked at her with so much depth it almost scared her.
“I won’t.”
“Wait,” he said suddenly, grabbing his phone.
She blinked.
“What?”
He was already dialing.
“Who are you calling?”
Her mother picked.
“My son!”
Valerie gasped.
“Mummy?!”
He turned the camera toward them.
“She said yes.”
Her mother screamed.
“Jesus! Osas! You don gree?!”
Valerie laughed through tears. “Iye… yes…”
Moments later his mother joined the call. The excitement multiplied and prayers started immediately. Blessings poured out.
“God will sustain this relationship!”
“You will not fail each other!”
“Your love will grow!” “You will produce godly seeds.”
Valerie held the phone with shaky hands, overwhelmed.
Purity stood beside her, his hand gently resting at her back.
Later that night after the calls, the laughter and the tears. They stood outside her car. None of them was ready to leave.
“Thank you for coming,” he said softly.
She smiled faintly. “I couldn’t not come.”
He stepped slightly closer. Not too close. Just enough to be in her space.
Then gently he leaned in and placed a soft kiss on her cheek.
Her breath hitched. She looked at him with her heart full and her eyes soft.
“Goodnight, Purity.”
“Goodnight… mama.”
She got into her car and started the engine but didn’t drive immediately. She looked at him one more time. Standing there. Watching her like she was something he never wanted to lose again.
And for the first time in a long time… Valerie didn’t feel fear. She felt…Hope.
She didn’t sleep much that night. Not because her mind was restless the way it used to be… but because her heart was full in a way she was still trying to understand.
She lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling, fingers absentmindedly tracing the edge of her duvet.
She said yes. A small smile tugged at her lips.
“God abeg… see me thinking about man by this time.” she whispered into the quiet, covering her face briefly, half shy, half overwhelmed.
She replayed everything in her head. The website. The videos. The drive. The hug. The way he didn’t kiss her. The way he could have… but chose restraint.
That part did something to her. It settled something deep inside her chest.
This was different. He has always been sweet but this time… felt more intentional.
The Next Morning, Valerie sat across from her mentor, hands wrapped around a cup of tea she hadn’t really touched.
Her mentor watched her quietly. The kind of watching that saw beyond words.
“So…” her mentor finally said, a knowing smile tugging at her lips, “you drove to his house instead of clicking yes.”
Valerie blinked, slightly embarrassed.
“How did you—”
Her mentor laughed softly. “My dear, Tammy has a mouth that cannot keep secrets to save her life.”
Valerie groaned.
“Of course she does…”
They both laughed lightly. Then her mentor leaned forward slightly.
“Tell me everything.”
Valerie exhaled slowly. And she did. She told her everything. From the moment she saw the website… To the way her heart fought itself… To the drive… To the hug… To the words…
By the time she finished, her eyes were slightly glossy.
“I said yes cause I feel at peace,” she whispered.
Her mentor nodded gently. “I know.”
Silence stretched between them. Then her mentor spoke.
“Valerie… you have a good man.”
Valerie swallowed. “You think so?”
Her mentor smiled.
“I don’t just think so. I’ve seen it.”
She leaned back slightly.
“Do you know how many men would go that far not out of manipulation, but out of intentionality?”
Valerie shook her head slowly.
“Not many,” her mentor answered for her.
“He sought counsel,” she continued.
“He honored your authority structures your mother, your spiritual covering.”
Valerie’s chest tightened slightly.
“He didn’t just come back with feelings,” her mentor said softly.
“He came back with intentionalty..”
Valerie looked down at her hands. Her voice came out quieter.
“I’m still scared.”
“I know..”
“What if we fall back into old patterns?”
Her mentor didn’t rush to answer.
Instead, she asked her“What have you learned so far from your sessions with your therapist and our weekly catch-up?”
Valerie paused.
“I’ve learned how to communicate better.”
“I’ve learned that I shut people out when I feel unsafe.”
“I’ve learned that I need to express my needs… not expect people to guess them.”
Her voice softened further.
“And I’ve learned that I’m allowed to be loved… without fighting it.”
Her mentor smiled.
“Then you’re not the same person anymore.”
“You’re not entering this relationship as the old Valerie,” her mentor continued.
“You’re entering it as a healed—healing—Valerie.”
Valerie exhaled.
“And him?” her mentor asked.
Valerie smiled faintly. “He’s… softer now.”
She laughed lightly.
“And somehow stronger at the same time.”
Her mentor nodded.
“That’s what happens when a man truly encounters God.”
“Build slowly.”
Valerie nodded.
“Let God lead.” Another nod.
“And don’t run when it gets uncomfortable.”
Valerie smiled slightly. “I won’t, ma”
Purity picked her up that evening for their “Welcome back” dinner date as Tammy called it. When she stepped out, he paused. Actually paused. Just to look at her.
“Omo…” he breathed under his breath, shaking his head slightly, “God really took His time with you.”
Valerie rolled her eyes, trying to hide her smile.
“Please enter the car.” she said
He opened the door for her, waited till she was seated then Closed it gently.
The drive was easy. There was soft music playing– he played LMLY by AEO. The song he sang when he was trying to woo her.
She laughed so hard cause she remembered how he sounded that night. It was a refreshing drive
“How was your meeeting today?” he asked.
“With my mentor?”
He nodded.
She smiled slightly. “She said I have a good man.”
He chuckled softly.
“I like your mentor.”
She turned slightly toward him.
“She wasn’t joking, you know.”
“I’m not either.”
Then she asked “How are you… really?”
He took a breath.
“I’m good. Balancing ministry with work now is a lot. It's been stressful but enlightening."
She tilted her head slightly and he glanced at her briefly then back on the road.
“I really want to do better by you. I want a family with you. One where I balance ministry and family perfectly. ”
Her chest tightened slightly.
“I know. And I'm ready to walk beside you and assist you when need be.”
He smiled faintly and lifted her hand to give it a peck.
“Thank you, mama.” He didn't let go of her hand till they got to the restaurant.
The date itself was intimate. They chose a rooftop restaurant with soft lights. The Lagos skyline stretching endlessly.
They talked about everything. Their future family, their hopes, their businesses and ministry. The date ended beautifully and he dropped her off at home.
The message came in when Valerie least expected it. She was curled up on her couch, laptop open, half-working, half-thinking about everything her life had become in just a few weeks when her phone buzzed. She glanced at it casually then paused.
Mum ❤️
Osas, come home this weekend. I want to see you. And come with Purity.
“Hmmmm”
She leaned back into the couch, staring at the message like it carried something heavier than words.
Come home.
That phrase had never been simple for her. Her fingers hovered over the keyboard, then moved to call.
“Hello, iye.”
“My darling,” her mum’s voice came warm, steady, grounding.
Valerie exhaled softly.
“Mummy… why do you need me to come home now?”
There was a pause.
“Because i need you to do something for me and I know you are ready for it.”
Valerie frowned slightly.
“Ready for what?”
“Just come home first.”
Valerie let out a small, almost ironic laugh.
“Mummy, you’re planning something.”
“I’m not,” her mum said gently.
“Just come home and please bring him,” her mum added softly.
Valerie’s heart skipped.
“Purity?”
“Yes.”
“I like the young man a lot and I think it's time we meet each other's families officially .”
Valerie’s throat tightened. She wanted to protest but she gave up.
“Mummy…. okay I’ll come.”
Later that evening, she told him. They were sitting across from each other in a park just close to his house, fingers loosely intertwined.
“My mum wants to see us this weekend.”
Purity blinked. “Us?”
She nodded.
“She said I should bring you.” A small smile tugged at his lips.
“Wow. My guy. I really like your Mom”
She didn’t smile back immediately.
“I’m scared.”
He squeezed her hand gently.
“Of what?”
She hesitated. Then said it.
“I have a deep feeling that my dad might be there.”
Purity studied her.
“Do you want him to be there?”
Valerie looked away and her voice dropped.
“I don’t know.”
Purity leaned slightly closer.
“If he’s there… we’ll handle it together.”
She looked back at him. Something about the way he said ‘we’ settled her.
“You won’t leave my side?” she asked quietly.
He shook his head.
“Not for a second, mama.”
She nodded slowly and rested her head on his shoulder .
“Okay, babe.”
The flight to Benin felt longer than it actually was. Valerie barely spoke. Her mind was occupied with a lot of thoughts. She exhaled slowly and her hand tightened around Purity’s.
He noticed immediately.
“Hey, baby…”
She turned to him.
“I’m here, okay??”
She nodded and rested her head on his shoulder. He leaned slightly closer and placed a peck on her now closed eyes.
“I love you, beautiful.”
They arrived Benin at 5:25pm. When they got to the airport, there was a taxi waiting to pick them. They got in and Purity wrapped his arms around Valerie as she could barely say a word. He was genuinely concerned about her. They drove into G.R.A and the house car in view. The house looked exactly the same. A two storey building that her father left for her mother when they separated.
Her mum came out immediately she heard the car honk.
“Osas!” Valerie melted into her arms and held her tightly like she needed grounding.
Then her mum turned to Purity.
“My son.” She hugged him too.
“Welcome, home.”
Everything felt okay for a moment. Until Valerie stepped into the living room. She instantly froze.
Her father was there in flesh. He had aged a bit. He now had grey hairs but he still looked as fine as she remembered.
“Osereme…”
Her breath caught and her chest tightened instantly. Her body reacted before her mind could.
She didn’t move nor even speak. She was frozen.
Purity stepped closer and gently took her hand. He held it firmly. He needed her to know that he was there.
Her father stood up slowly. Like any sudden movement might break her completely.
“I… I didn’t know if you would come.”
Valerie’s voice came out controlled.
“I didn’t know you would be here.”
Her mum stepped in softly.
“I invited him, Osas.”
Valerie nodded. But didn’t look at her. Her eyes stayed on him.
Unspoken and unresolved years sat between them.
“Can we talk, please?” her father asked.
Valerie hesitated. Then nodded.
They sat down on the sofa and Purity stayed beside her. Their hands were still connected.
Her father looked at her.
“You’ve grown, my osas”
Valerie gave a small nod.
“I’ve missed you.”
Her lips parted slightly. Then closed.
“I didn’t know how to miss you. I don't think I missed you”
Her father swallowed. Purity held her hands tighter more as a sign for her to calm down and pick her words carefully.
“I didn’t know how to be present,” he admitted.
Valerie let out a slow breath she didn't know she had been holding.
“Why?”
Her voice wasn’t angry.
Her father looked down then back up.
“I thought I was doing the right thing.”
She frowned slightly.
“By not being there?”
“I thought serving God was enough.” “I thought that was all that mattered in life. It took me years after I separated from your mom to realize that my family is my first ministry.”
Her chest tightened.
“I thought if I gave myself fully to ministry… everything else would align.”
A tear slipped down her cheek.
“ But it didn’t.”he whispered. “It didn’t.”
Valerie leaned forward slightly. Her voice shook now.
“You were never there.”
Her father closed his eyes briefly.
“I needed you.”
“I needed you to show up.” Her voice cracked.
“I needed you to choose us sometimes.” Tears fell freely now.
“But you didn’t.”
Her father’s shoulders dropped.
“I know and I am sorry.”
“No,” she said, shaking her head.
“You don’t know.”
Her breath became uneven.
“I used to wait for you.”
“Wait for you to come home early.”
“Wait for you to ask about my day.”
“Wait for you to notice me.”
Her voice dropped.
“I stopped waiting.”
Purity squeezed her hand gently as a reminder that he was there with her.
Valerie continued.
“I told myself I didn’t need you.”
Her lips trembled. “But I did.”
Her father wiped his face slowly. Her mother sniffed in the corner and used her wrapper to wipe her face.
“I failed you and I failed God” he said
She nodded. “Yes.”
“I failed your mother.” Another nod.
“I failed our family.”
Then softly
“I’m sorry, Osereme.”
Valerie looked at him. For the first time—not as a memory. But as a man. A flawed man. A human man.
“I carried this for so long.”
Her voice softened.
“I didn’t trust love because of you.”
Her father’s breath caught.
“I didn’t trust men because of you.” Tears fell again.
“I thought… if I love someone, they will leave.”
Her chest rose and fell heavily.
Her father leaned forward slightly.
“I never wanted that for you.”
“But that’s what happened.”
“I’ve been in therapy.” Her father nodded slowly.
“I’m learning to let go.” She swallowed.
“I don’t want to hate you anymore.” Her voice broke. “It’s heavy.”
Her father took a deep breath “I don’t deserve your forgiveness.”
Valerie didn’t respond.
“But I’m asking for it anyway.” She looked at him. “Not because I’ve earned it…” His voice cracked.
“But because I want a chance to be better.”
“I want to know you again.”Her chest tightened.
“If you’ll let me.”
Valerie’s closed her eyes briefly. Tears slipping down. Purity’s hand tightened around hers.
She exhaled slowly. “I forgive you.” “I forgave you a while ago. I hold nothing against you, dad.’
Her father broke down in uncontrolled tears completely.
“Thank you…” “Thank you, Osereme”
Valerie shook her head slightly.
“This doesn’t fix everything completely, dad.”
“I know.”
“It will take time.” “But I’m willing to try.”
Her father nodded. “So am I.” They both got up and hugged each other. It was so emotional a moment that the mom cried so hard. Purity could not hold his tears too. Afterwards, the father prayed for both of them and left to his house.
Valerie leaned back slightly she was emotionally drained. Purity gently rubbed the back of her hand.
“You did well, baby. I'm proud of you and I love you” he whispered.
She looked at him with her eyes soft.
“I almost didn’t come.” He smiled gently.
“But you did.” She exhaled.
“And I’m glad I did. Thank you for coming with me, baby. I don't think I'm would have done this without you.”
Later that night Valerie stood outside. The night air cool against her skin. Purity joined her.
“Are you okay?” he asked softly.
She nodded. Then she leaned into him slightly.
“I feel… lighter.”
He wrapped an arm around her shoulders.
“That’s what happens when you release what was never meant to stay.”
She smiled faintly.
“I couldn’t have done it without you.”
He shook his head “You did the work.”
She looked up at him. “Stay with me before you go to your hotel, please?”
He smiled.
“Always, baby. Always.”
